Effective disinfectant and sterilizer

To date, peracetic acid disinfectants remain one of the most commonly used products to eliminate all germs and viruses. In the medicalfield, agents based on this oxidant remove surface contaminants (mainly proteins) on various devices such as the endoscopic tube; an automated machine using peracetic acid to chemically sterilize medical, surgical and dental instruments.

Cleanliness is essential in any production or health care environment where a person or product may carry pathogens. Pathogens are harmful to sick or immunosuppressed people. Decontamination and sterilization measures ensure that products, packaging and tools will not serve as vectors and transmit bacteria, fungi, spores or viruses to vulnerable patients.

PA is an excellent sporicide agent and perfect for broad-spectrum disinfection for clean rooms. It leaves no residue, it remains active during exposure to organic matter (such as blood), it is environmentally friendly and is effective against microbes and spores with a fast cycle time.

The components of the product

This is the result of the reaction of acetic acrid and hydrogen peroxide with an acid catalyst. Peracetic acid is a colourless liquid with a strong bitter and pungent smell. It is used in different sectors such as bactericide and fungicide, especially in aerial disinfection and food processing. It is an excellent alternative as a reagent in the manufacture of caprolactame and glycerol. However, it can also be a good oxidizer for the preparation of epoxy compounds; bleaching agent; sterilizing agent; polymerization catalyst for polyester resins.

For domestic uses, the product is found in stabilized solutions. These mixtures contain acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide and water.

Its different uses

Thanks to its multiple attractions, this oxidant is strongly present in major sectors: agri-food, textiles, cleaning, construction, medical… For example, the product is used as a chemical disinfectant in health care, the food industry and during water treatment. Peracetic acid can also be used to design artificial intermediaries in pharmaceuticals.

Many users know that peracetic acid is versatile and effective. This is why professionals with environmental responsibilities consider it to be biotope-friendly because of its decomposition results. However, industrial hygienists recognize that it is also highly corrosive and a powerful oxidizer. Exposure to peracetic acid can seriously irritate the eyes, skin and respiratory system. As a corrosive substance, it causes watery eyes, extreme discomfort and irritation of the upper respiratory tract in humans even when contact with concentrations as low as 15.6 mg of peracetic acid/m3 (5 ppm) for only 3 minutes. For optimal safety, the food and sanitary industries enjoy a product sold in the form of concentrates from 1 to 5 and are diluted before use.
